REXBURG – Ever since no-fault divorce laws were enacted in the 1970′s, divorce rates have risen. As an attempt to re-strengthen families, LDS Apostles have been visiting Eastern Idaho and speaking to their members. LDS Apostle Quentin Cook spoke Sunday to a congregation of around 1000 people in Rexburg. He’s one of five apostles that have come to Eastern Idaho in the past month to speak about strengthening families. Blaming the no-fault divorce law for high divorce rates, Cook called upon members to keep their marital covenants. Here’s what some of the members had to say about his message. “It was needed, they talked about families and the importance of it and how it’s being degraded in our society today,” said Ben Hull. “Marriage is the new dating, they’ll try it and it if doesn’t work, quit, and move on. Marriage is a much higher obligation than something you can just discard without regard,” said Luke Mackowiak “I was looking in the paper the other day, $99 and you can have a divorce. And if that’s easy, why not?” said Hull. “I think it’s just people’s excuse to get out of their responsibility. People need to stand up and take responsibility for themselves,” said Scott Sorenson. “Families are under attack by media. People have many different ideas about family, they want to change the definition of families, that has been predefined by a higher authority,” said Mackowviak. The Uniform Divorce Bill
“The greatest project NAWL has ever undertaken” is the description given by committee chair Matilda Fenberg to NAWL’s pioneering work to create a Uniform Divorce Bill. At the 1947 NAWL convention in Cleveland, it was voted to draft and promote a bill that would embody the ideal of no-fault divorce. A draft prepared by Fenberg, working with NAWL past presidents Helen M. Cirese and J.
