Me and my husband are both in the Army, same rank, and same pay (I make a little more cuz I’ve been in longer) and both of us either want joint custody or if we can’t work that out since we will be stationed apart eventually, we both want him with sole custody. He is going to do the paperwork to file for separation on Monday…any advice for me so I don’t get screwed out of custody?

If there is even the slightest doubt in your mind about whether or not you can trust your soon to be ex, then you MUST get a lawyer, at LEAST to review the paperwork. A lawyer has been through divorces hundreds of times, and he/she has seen just about everything. Do NOT let your lack of money or desire to “be nice” to him create a situation that will cause you misery for years to come. Also, NEVER agree to letting him have sole custody. That means that you have virtually no say in how your child is raised. Even if you eventually decide that it is best for him to basically reside with his father (“physical custody”), you still want to have “joint legal custody”.

BTW, if the two of you don’t reach an agreement on custody on your own, then you will either choose a mediator, have court appointed mediation, or fight it out in court. The first option is the least expensive, the last option is the most expensive.
