Question by saywhatkid: How do you find free legal advice?
I have a friend that is going through a sticky break-up, and needs advice on some situations such as real estate and other financial situations. Most phone calls end up at divorce lawyers and so forth, where the friend is told “wrong office” and such, since the couple was not married. Is there a website that will steer people to the right lawyer type/office? And will they refer a person to a local office in the town the friend lives in? Is there a website like this?

Findlaw.com is a half decent site, although when it comes to lawyers I generally prefer word of mouth or references. What you basically need is a generalist lawyer. As far as real estate lawyers go, if you know a local agent, they would be a good reference.

Question by Rick: Where can I find the best legal advice dealing in business and divorce on the web?
My wife and I run a business. My name is not actually on the business license but I have built it practically alone for 4 out of the 5 years it has been in operation. We are now considering divorce. I want to keep the business going. She doesn’t but she will not put my name on the business license or give me the business.
Apart from me buying her out (I feel like I would be buying my own business) what rights do I have in retaining the clients that we have now? If I do not buy her out she said she would just sell or shut it down.
Question: Can I open the same business under a different name and call all my clients to let them know of the name change? Would that be legal? And would that be ethical?

I am going through a divorce right now and had a real estate
business for three years. My ex wants $ 143,000 for his half.
I closed it down last year because I had negative cash flow.
We have spent over $ 193,000 on the divorce and related
fees. It is totally stupid ! We have 4 kids. I would reccommend a private judge if you have the money. Keep it away from lawyers all they do is lie and make you tell you what you want to hear. Settle out of court ! Give her a percentage of the profit for four years.

Question by Kalani: Where can I find free legal advice on divorce?
I live in NY and need some help figuring out where the hell I start with this process. We’ve only been married 6 months, no kids, no real assets. We agree that the marriage is over, and don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a divorce. Where can I find some free legal advice, someone that can point me in the right direction?

I live in Michigan, and here, we have our local women’s center that gives free advice to women who are contemplating divorce.
I think it is every Tuesday and Thursday that attorneys come there and they listen to you and what you have to say, and if they think your case is worthwhile, then they will take your case and work out a payment plan for you that will be easy on your Wallet.
