How to find out if a divorce document is legal or not?

A year later, my father, the mother of my hands a document that certifies the card thats divorce. Once again, he never went to a judge, nor received any documents mailed, or signed any documents. We went to different judges, but everyone says we have to go to a lawyer. Every lawyer wants to charge the call to me. How do I know?
